I have worked as an early years outdoor educator for over 14 years. I began at Woodland Outdoor Kindergartens in Glasgow, Scotland, before moving to Canada to join the Reggio Emillia inspired Alderwood House School in Richmond BC. Most recently I have been at West Point Grey Academy in Vancouver as teacher in their inquiry based junior kindergarten program. I greatly enjoyed my time at these amazing, inspiring schools, and decided in 2018 to now set up my own program - Woods and Waves Outdoor Learning
Through these years I have taught children in an outdoor setting to be captains of their own ship. They build emotional intelligence, self-esteem, develop problem solving skills, find a respect for the environment, work as a team and become part of the community. This is just a small sample of the beauty of the children being outdoors each day, and I feel privileged to get to share in that.
On moving to Vancouver, one of the outdoor capitals of the world, I was surprised to find so few outdoor schools, a curriculum so popular in Europe. As this is a new concept, I am happy to answer any questions (like “What happens when it rains?” – Yes, we are still outside, rain or shine!) and personally let you know the huge benefits, through email, phone call or over a coffee in the neighbourhood. Please get in touch.
Ms. Taylor has been with us since 2021 and is amazing at forming close bonds with all the children through her calm, caring nature and her many nature art activities.
Prior to joining us she worked with children with additional needs and volunteered with various groups for youth. Taylor also has a B.A in Environmental Studies and works part time on her own burgeoning art career.
Woods and Waves is always excited to hear from potential outdoor educators and lovers of play! We are especially excited to hear from anyone interested in spring/summer camp and sub employment.
Our ideal candidate would love children, the outdoors and strongly believe in the benefits of play in children’s development. An ECE certificate is preferred but not essential. Although a clean criminal record and a current first aid is required.
Tasks would include playing alongside the children, observing their play and interactions, planning some projects / activities based on their interests and assisting in setting up taking down of our camp (including some light lifting).
